Floodproofing Assessment Tool

Date: June 2012

When vital, vulnerable functions are flooded, the affected area often exceeds the boundaries of the function. During the flood of 2007 in England, 350,000 people were affected by the flooding of a water treatment plant.

The Floodproofing and Assessment helps policy makers, to reduce risks of flooding quickly and cost effectively, in line with the third step of the EU flood directive. Gaps in existing plans can be met by considering these vital and vulnerable functions such as power plants, airports, water treatment plants and hospitals.

The tool is an elaboration of a four year EU FP7 research program called FloodProBE and informs policy makers if flooding of critical functions in the municipality or region will have a large scale impact. Subsequently methods are provided on how these buildings can be protected.
