05-04-2011 Graduation project: Affordable sustainable floating houses

Two students from the Avans, University of applied sciences, did their final project on sustainable floating housing. DeltaSync coached them in this project.

The motivation for their research is the combination of a shortage of space for water storage on the one hand, and a shortage of space for living on the other. The lack of space results in high land prices and increasing sustainability requirements increase construction costs. This creates an urgent shortage of affordable housing. They conducted a feasibility study for affordable sustainable floating homes. Their main research objectives were young couples without childeren, who are looking to buy their first house.

The study used a reference property which led to a sustainable design. Eventually it became clear that the initial design had to be modified to ensure the financial feasibility. This study is a first step in achieving affordable housing on the water. Further research will optimize designs for affordable floating housing and will help the process of realization of these houses in the future.
