30-09-2014 Measuring water quality underneath floating structures

This research is a collaboration between Tauw, Deltares, Deltasync and various Dutch universities, water boards and municipalities. It focuses on the impacts of floating urban developments on the water quality and ecology, which are currently largely unknown. Coverage of the water surface is known to influence air-water interactions and penetration of light, but knowledge on this subject is limited. This knowledge gap complicates the job of water authorities and municipalities in creating a policy framework, and therefore to regulate and facilitate the development of new floating projects.

In order to investigate the water quality around and under floating structures, a remote-controlled underwater drone equipped with several water quality sensors and a video camera, is currently being used to go under floating structures to collect data. The sensors allow to monitor the following water quality parameters: pressure (depth), temperature, conductivity, nitrate, ammonium, dissolved oxygen and turbidity.

The extracted data provides information on how the water quality parameters vary under floating structures. To understand whether the floating body has an effect on water quality, the data is compared to parameters from the same water body, but from zones unaffected by the blockage caused by the floating structure. As an example of this methodology, the figure below shows graphs where measurements from open water are easily compared to measurements under the floating structures. The presented data was collected from the Floating Pavilion, in Rotterdam.

In addition to the data from the sensors, the underwater drone also allows to collect footage of aquatic life, which is also a good indicator of water quality.

Based on the preliminary results from this study, it seems that the current small scale floating structures do not have a significant influence on water quality. Moreover, it was understood that underwater drones are suitable to use for water quality measurements, considering that they can easily go under floating structures to collect data (expensive and troublesome to access by other methods). However, with the used equipment, there are still some challenges to overcome such as the difficulty of knowing the exact location of the drone.

All the collected data and videos from several locations around The Netherlands are available in an online tool (www.climatescan.nl), which is constantly being updated with new data. This website aims at promoting knowledge transfer among stakeholders, and to help gaining insight on the environmental impact of floating solutions.

Finally, the video in the link below gives a general impression of the project:
