10-04-2014 Study on potential of floating urbanization in delta cities

Together with the Rotterdam University of Applied Science and the BlueRevolution Foundation DeltaSync is conducting research on the potential of floating urbanization for individual delta cities around the world. The BlueRevolution strategy is used as a starting point for the research. Whether the strategy will be successful depends on multiple factors. Each of these factors will be researched in its own phase.

The project contains 5 phases:

  1. Urban metabolism (CO2 and nutrient cycles)
  2. Current and future land scarcity
  3. Potential food and energy production through floating development
  4. Evaluation of suitability for floating urbanization in various cities
  5. Implementation strategy for most promising cities

DeltaSync is currently working on the first phase. In this phase the nutrient cycles of three promising delta cities are being mapped in order to determine how these nutrients can be reused to produce food and biomass. In the research two methods are used which will be compared to each other.
